Music and art are the human forms of expression, each with its own language and impact, and both are the ways to express our feelings and emotions since ancient times and throughout the years. There is a deep connection between music and visual art.
We Speak Music:
Music is described as a universal language. Whatever the culture or the language, music is always the unifying way. In the Middle East, I can hear a song from East Asia or South America and enjoy it and feel that its melodies express me. Music crosses borders to tell stories about love, friendship, freedom, peace and war, and homelands. Like language uses words and grammar, music also comprises rhythms, melodies, and harmonies to create meaningful sentences that can express more than words.
We See Art:
If you take a look around you, you’ll find art everywhere. Art in ancient times was one of the only methods of expression. Many civilizations have been identified through their art. Ancient Egyptian civilization was rich in visual art and that’s how it was identified and discovered. Another example is the Nabataeans in Petra in the south of Jordan.
So we know that art, like music, has its own grammar to tell us stories without using words. Artists use light and shadow, dark and pale colors to express emotions and feelings about everything, like victory and loss, the meaning of life, the colors of each season, and so much more.
The link between art and music is a rich field of exploration. Historically artists and musicians have drawn inspiration from each other’s work. And nowadays multimedia that combines art and sounds provide experiences that together can complement each other to create new concepts and new ways to express ourselves.
