The Taboo

Previously, mental health and emotional well-being  was a kind of taboo in the entire world, minimized by almost everyone. As a result, many people suffered without knowing what was happening to them and some even lost their lives due to mental disorders that they did not even know existed. With the passing of time and the advances in society, we began to understand the causes and consequences of suffering from a mental illness, and began to consider it very important to take care of it.

Nowadays, mental health is one of the most important things we should take care of, but unfortunately it remains a taboo in society. From my point of view, not all people consider mental health important. There are even those who think that going to a psychologist is only for those who are “crazy,” which seems very incoherent to me, because sometimes we need to talk to someone about everything we feel, and we want to have a person who knows how to listen and who advises us correctly without judging us for everything we are feeling or thinking.

In my community, this topic is not talked about openly in all places; although there are organizations that try to promote the importance of mental health, not all of them receive good support. As for schools and colleges, very, very little is said about how important it is to talk about our emotions and feelings. Some schools have psychologists, but they don’t talk about it either —  they say that if a student needs to talk about a problem that is affecting them psychologically, they can go to another psychologist. At my school, sometimes there are readings about mental health, but that is not enough to make everyone aware of how important it is to be able to have a good mental state.

Finally, at home, there is no constant support from many parents, because they themselves do not even talk about this to their children, sometimes because they didn’t receive that support from their parents and as a result they don’t know how to do it. Fortunately, not all parents are like this; even though they didn’t receive it, some try to give this help to their children. But there are still very few who actually  give importance to mental health and the importance of taking care of it. If only all this could be changed, the world would be much better, because if we start investigating, we can see the cases of depression and anxiety that exist in young people and that often lead them to make poor decisions, especially if they don’t go to the psychologist.

Let’s learn that emotions are important, that crying and screaming is okay, and that we should not be afraid to ask for help. That if we need it, there will always be someone who can be our support, we just have to find them. If we are mentally well, we will be well in all areas of our lives. Let’s promote the importance of mental health and make it no longer a taboo.
