The Power to Change Our Story

Human DignityGlobal Beat

If we look at our society today, women have the right to get an education, to work, to own property, and more. However, decades ago they were forced to work within the household only.

My paternal grandmother was told not to work, but she decided to anyway. She rose above the barriers set for women and broke the stereotype that limited women to a life at home.

Today, my mother says, “I am happy working, as my family always supports me to work.”

I myself have risen above the barriers that often prevent girls from going to school and getting educated. Even today, there are many girls who are not allowed to study. There are many girls who are even forced into child labor at a young age.

Previously, women and girls were not given the opportunity to share their opinions and emotions. They were supposed to cook and clean the house. Now, there is a visible change in the respect women get, but a lot of women are still not given their rights — the world still needs to work on that aspect!

Coming back to my grandmother, I believe that she had the power to change her story. She is not alone; there are many girls and women I know who have risen above the preconception that all women stay at home, including my teachers, my friends, my mother, and me!

Please help young girls and women rise above the barriers that keep women from getting their rights and respect. To make the world a better place for women and girls, everyone needs plays a part in supporting and helping women overcome various stereotypes.
