The Mixing Pot of Creativity that is High School

High school, depending on who you ask, is the pinnacle of teenagerhood, or simply a bridge between childhood and adulthood. But wherever your high school is, big or small, your school has an eclectic student body, and, therefore, a range of creativity.

Oftentimes we think of creativity as strictly fine arts: music, drawing, theater, etc. But creativity, inventiveness, innovation, and artistry can come in non-traditional forms, such as math and science. You hear about how some people are either left-brained or right-brained. With the left brain being mathematical and linear in thinking, while the right brain is more artistic and imaginative. It’s easy to think that “left-brained” people are not creative where in reality they are creative in different ways. Creativity is “the use of imagination or original ideas to create something…” Numbers are numbers, but you can interpret them to act on them and make something; that, too, is an art form.

I say all this because my community, and my school, is bursting with creativity, I see it in lockers, in poetry, in writing, and in drawings. I hear it in conversation between friends. And I’m sure if you look closely, it’s at your school too in the daily bustle and grind.

High school is a petri dish. And another name for petri dish is “cell culture dish” and we’re the microorganism. School is a major socializing factor in its students’ lives, and a student body reflects that particular school’s community and culture. My community, and my school, understand that we all have different ways to be creative, , some are more creative than others, and some creativity is easier to catch. But they understand that all of us are creative. All of our creative expressions come together like puzzles to unveil the full picture of us as a community.
