Do we live in a cobweb of lies or a cobweb of truths? Does every truth hide a lie? Does every lie hide a truth? Do we only hear what’s there, or do we only hear what we want to hear? Is it both? Are we allowed to make something up to make ourselves feel better? Do we always do what’s best?
All these questions I ask myself at some point, with a mixture of emotions. I think the answer varies for every person, but no one knows the exact answer. I only know what works for me.
First off, what is the truth? According to the dictionary, it’s a noun: the quality or state of being true. This leads to my next question — what’s true? It’s so hard to decide what we think is true. Every lie is made with a truth, so could there ever be a lie? We make up things, and that’s a so-called lie. But what if a lie is just our being true? Since they are what we want to hear, what we want to happen, what we want to see, our thoughts are what others call fake. And the cobweb is full and lies and truths! How could anyone ever be fake? We are made up of truths, so we are made up by all others. I once read that we act most like the top five people we hang out with, which is something Jim Rohn had said. We are all people bounced off of one another.
So then, why do people wear a mask? When someone puts on a mask, it’s really hard to rip off, because at some point, it engraves itself onto the human being. Some can sometimes peel it off, and other times some might have to rip it off. The mask is a lie, which is what becomes you. We all have truths, and so we are made of lies. For example, the most common mask is, “I’m fine.” Maybe we aren’t fine. Maybe we are experiencing something that doesn’t make everything fine. Since we said that we are fine, a part of us actually is. Because of the fact that we tell everyone that we are fine, people believe it, causing us to believe it. A truth can come from a lie. And a lie can come from a truth.
This essay isn’t to say that you should lie and it’s “right”; I mean to show that we all lie , and it is a part of us, something that makes us unique. Lies are a web you get yourself into to make things better, or sometimes worse. Lies are our form of perception; they are what we see. Remember, we all have our own lies, so you don’t need to give them to someone else.
