Believing in Magic

Myth and MagicGlobal Beat

The term “magic” means the power to influence events by using
mysterious or supernatural forces. I know someone who believes in the power of magic, and that person happens to be my aunt, Mrs. Khan. She spent her childhood years in a village in Pakistan and due to that she was exposed to their traditional beliefs and norms. Superstition was one of these beliefs; however, Mrs. Khan never paid much attention to it until an incident occurred which changed her mindset and perspective.

When Mrs. Khan was about 10 years old, her father and uncle were arguing over a piece of land in the village. The enmity between the two increased when the court granted the land to her father. Days passed, and Mrs. Khan saw lemon and blood near the entrance to that plot.

One night Mrs. Khan and her siblings heard some stones falling in
their house. The siblings complained to their parents, and her father was the first one to touch the stones and keep them aside. The family thought that it might be a cat or some wild animal and decided to ignore it.

After that night, her father became extremely sick and the doctors
were unable to explain the cause. It was when a family member suggested that Mrs. Khan’s mother go to a priest and inquire about the matter that they found out about black magic. The priest suggested that Mrs. Khan’s family read some holy verses and take some measures which would guard them from these evil acts. This is when Mrs. Khan came to believe in the power of magic, as it could have been a reason behind the demise of her father (which, luckily, it wasn’t). She believes that magic does exist and there are people who perform it with evil intentions and we should beware of such acts.
