A Strong Community

Society and the IndividualGlobal Beat

Community is described as a group of people, living in a close area, with common interests. The community in Robertson County, Kentucky, definitely isn’t the biggest, but our small size has only brought us together.

The people in Robertson County are all very close, and this leads to a very good support system. It’s truly amazing watching a small town come together when someone needs help.

The support system can also be found in the school; most students and teachers have known each other for years and thus will always have each others’ backs. This unique community has given many students one-of-a-kind opportunities. Most students are part of an afterschool activity that has allowed them to advance as people and connect with others. Our local FCCLA often goes to the local senior care home. Many local farmers provide animals for 4H students to raise and show. FSA students beautify the neighborhood by selling flowers to help them pay for field trips. Our entire community can often be found at Black and White Night (our beginning-of-the-season pep rally), supporting our basketball teams. All of these examples help strengthen the bonds of our community.

As I mentioned earlier, most people have known each other for years, but they are extremely welcoming to newcomers. The community often knows the newcomers’ names before they even meet them, and when they do meet them, they are warm and welcoming, often with a wave as they drive by.

Another interesting feature of our community is the moms’ use of Facebook. The moms of the community are always posting about upcoming events and cheering on each others’ kids. Like most communities, social media keeps us connected. We also have a local newspaper that is always filled with the latest community news, similar to the newspaper on our school website.

Robertson County is a unique community that all of us are happy to be a part of. Whether it's because of the support, opportunities, welcoming people, or close bonds, we are a community, and that has had an impact on all the students, including me.

Sydney Cochlin is a 9th grader at Robertson County School in Kentucky.
